Why An Organic Crib Mattress?

We spend almost a third of our lives sleeping. Babies are in their sleeping environment even longer than that.

Because of its health benefits, organic alternatives to food, clothing, and home products have become quite popular in recent years, and now the public is starting to catch on to organic mattresses as a healthier and safer alternative to chemically soaked mattresses.

What are the differences between an organic mattress and a synthetic mattress, and why should you be concerned about what you are sleeping on? While they look similar, the differences lie in what they are made of. Synthetic mattresses contain hundredths of harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, while organic and natural latex (also known as natural rubber) mattresses are natural and safe as well as bio-degradable.

Synthetic mattresses are full of polyurethane foam and/or other petrochemical materials, covered with synthetic fabrics (such as polyester, vinyl - Polyvinyl chloride - or nylon) and treated with chemical fire retardants (PBDEs) and formaldehyde.

The following chemicals may also be present in a synthetic mattress; phosphorus, arsenic, antimony,

These mattresses outgas over the years and emit potentially toxic substances that you absorb into your skin and lungs which may cause allergic reactions and a many other very serious health problems.

SIDS Connection?

A growing number of scientists are linking SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) to babies being poisoned by their crib mattress.

What they are saying is that the baby's sweating and spit up etc creates a fungus, Scopulariopsis brevicaulis within the mattress. The chemicals in the flame retardants and preservatives used in the crib mattress react with the fungus, and this results in the production of three nerve gases: phosphine, arsine and stibine, all of which can be very deadly, especially to infants.

Our Organic Crib Mattresses

All of our crib mattresses are made with the purest ingredients we could find.We use wool processed organically so that you know there are no extraneous chemicals or fibers (most "organic" wool is processed in plants that process other fibers, so it gets chemicals and fibers in it. To know for sure, you would need to get and actual test result from a lab that tested their CARDED wool).

The rubber is also tested for toxic vocs at a third party lab. We do not use ANY synthetic, nondisclosed hidden fibers as many of our competitors do.

We want you to have total purity. Beware of so called certifications. Organic has to be 95% pure to be called organic, Green Guard allows even more contaminants and chemicals.

Crib Innerspring Mattress - extra firm 260 actual coils with Quilted Organic Cotton Batting and Quilted Organic Wool - this padding makes for a firm mattress that has some give in the padding to cut down on flat head syndrome for which they do not know what damage it could be causing.

Organic fibers make it breathable and the quilting make so fibers don't shift. We offer mattresses for cribs, cradle, co-sleepers, baby bunks, portacribs and bassinets.

Our crib size mattresses are available in different styles - innerspring or natural rubber.

Children at Risk

"We are in an epidemic of environmentally mediated disease among American kids today. Rates of asthma, childhood cancers, birth defects and developmental disorders have exponentially increased, and it can't be explained by changes in the human genome. So what has changed? All the chemicals we're being exposed to."
Dr. Leo Trasande, Assistant Director of the
Center for Children's Health and the Environment at the
Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York City

Toxins in Children's Products Need to Be Taken Seriously

Children are at a greater risk of illness from toxic chemicals than adults - the skin of an infant is soft and permeable, and has less protective barriers than adult skin against chemicals. Indeed, a recent National Academy of Sciences study suggests that environmental factors contribute to at least 28 per cent of childhood developmental disabilities" Read the entire article

Consumer Products Source of Body Toxins

Canwest News Service

"When women from 120 middle-class homes in Cape Cod, Mass., learned their bodies contained low levels of toxic chemicals, most blamed chemical spills, waste dumping or secret military experiments.
The women were stunned to learn that most of their exposure came from plastics, flame-retardant clothing, cosmetics and household cleaners.
'It's the consumer products' that that bring chemicals into our bodies, says Kathleen Cooper, a researcher with the Canadian Environmental Law Association.
' People have this assumption that a product is on the shelf, and someone has made sure it's safe - nothing toxic in it. And that is a false assumption'.
The women in the Cape Cod study had volunteered urine samples for a 2003 study on chemical exposure. The survey found their bodies - and also household dust - contained cancer-causing compounds and chemicals that upset human hormone systems.
'An important shift occurs in how people understnad environmental pollution - its sources and possible solutions - as they learn about chemicals from everyday products that are detectable in urine samples and the household dust collection under the sofa she said.'"

Fragrance - a Cocktail of Toxicity
As fragrance chemicals can be absorbed, inhaled or ingested, they can modify brain blood flow, alter blood pressure, pulse and mood, trigger migraine headaches, etc.

Chemicals in Cosmetics - Not So Pretty
Buying cosmetics is a lottery, because we're often unable to determine whether or not hazardous chemicals are present in a product.

Body Products
By the time you leave the bathroom, you have just exposed yourself to about 200 chemicals through your body products.

Flame Retardants
An increasing body of research is showing that the chemicals used to protect us from fire could be putting a generation at risk of cancer, thyroid disruption, immune system deficiency and problems with the development of the reproductive systems and impaired learning and development in children.

Phthalates - What Are They, and Why Should I Care?
Invented in the 1930s, the common industrial chemicals called phthalates (pronounced tha–lates) are used as ingredients in a diverse range of consumer products, from cosmetics to food wraps, toys and building materials. Currently, the chemical industry produces billions of pounds of phthalates each year.
